The Medavie Health Foundation is funded by Medavie Blue Cross and our partner, Medavie Health Services, as part of a long term commitment to make a lasting impact in the communities where our employees and customers live and work.  Today, with a growing capital base of almost $30 million, the Foundation will provide a legacy to benefit future generations.

The Foundation is focused on two core causes that are of particular concern to Canadians – child and youth mental health and Type 2 diabetes. It aims to bring organizations and communities together through collaborative multi-year partnerships and to support grassroots, community based initiatives through an annual grants program.

Community Relations

A Commitment to Community

Medavie EMS Ontario places great importance on community involvement.  Employees throughout our group of companies are encouraged to support local initiatives by organizing events and fundraising.  This involvement provides the opportunity to support the village, town or city where staff live, while promoting paramedics and the entire EMS system.  We also support community events by providing paramedics and ambulances to such events.

Medavie Blue Cross has launched its new community involvement strategy called Building Healthy Communities™ to improve lives and support healthy outcomes in the communities in which we do business.  The program focuses on health-related organizations and causes; supports social welfare organizations in our communities; engages our employees through a formalized employee program and supports targeted medical research and education through the Medavie Health Foundation.

Through this program we contributed more than $640,000 to communities in Atlantic Canada, Ontario and Quebec.  Our Board of Directors has also approved a Social Dividend of 5% of net income to be contributed to the Medavie Health Foundation.  Any revenues generated by Medavie Health Services, over and above coverage of operating costs, are directed to the Medavie Health Foundation.

Another aspect of community involvement is the Community Paramedicine Program which was launched on Long and Brier Island in rural Digby County, Nova Scotia in 2004/2005. The Long and Brier Community Paramedicine program has demonstrated the operational and fiscal advantages of using existing paramedic resources to mitigate patient access care issues within their communities.  Through supplemental training, paramedics in this unique program earn special credentials and are able to provide non-traditional, pre-hospital care to patients in their community. Working closely with doctors and nurse practitioners, graduates of the program perform clinical duties in the homes of local patients with specific needs and conditions. Taking an active role by supporting local charities and community projects as it relates to the better life of the communities we share is one of Medavie EMS’
